Jessie Short is a Researcher affiliated with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies headquartered at James Cook University. Her research focuses on understanding climate change impacts on coral reef ecosystems, particularly calcification rates of reef-building species like corals and coralline algae, and the effects of ocean acidification on algal interactions. She holds a PhD from the University of Western Australia, completed under Professors Malcolm McCulloch and Gary Kendrick.
Education: Jessie earned a combined honours degree in marine biology and oceanography from Dalhousie University, Canada, before pursuing her PhD in Western Australia. Her work bridges ecological dynamics and human well-being, addressing how reefs respond to environmental changes.
Research Contributions: Jessie’s studies examine multi-scale reef dynamics, from population-level processes to macroevolutionary patterns, and explore strategies to enhance reef resilience. She has contributed to high-profile projects such as DNA analyses of coral adaptation to climate shifts and assessments of climate change impacts on fisheries and vulnerable communities.
Affiliations: She is part of the ARC Centre’s interdisciplinary team, collaborating on global coral reef conservation efforts. Her work aligns with the Centre’s mission to integrate ecosystem science with societal needs.
