Violaine Jolivet is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, University of Montreal. She directs the TRAMES (Transnationalism and Metropolises) laboratory and focuses on transnational urbanism, gentrification, and the right to the city, particularly examining marginalized communities in Montreal, Havana, and the Global South.

Her research explores transnational urban fabric, gentrification processes, and resistance strategies of minoritized groups, with a comparative focus on the Americas. Projects include studies on housing affordability in Montreal, transnational gentrification in Havana, and youth spatial practices in global cities. She employs sound documentaries, sensitive cartography, and counter-cartography in her work.
Key publications address transnational gentrification, spatial stigmatization, and residential dynamics in socialist cities. Her recent articles examine youth transient migration in Montreal, agricultural frontier expansion in Colombia, and the role of campus-led development in urban displacement.

She supervises graduate students in projects analyzing public space appropriation, touristic gentrification, and food sovereignty. Current research includes a 2025-2028 project on French youth migration's impact on Montreal neighborhoods, funded by SSHRC.
