Dr. Vincent Roy-Di Piazza is a historian of science, religion, and political economy specializing in northern Europe. Currently, he holds a European Research Council (ERC) postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) under the ERC-Consolidator grant (ID 101088549). He is also an associate researcher at the Oxford History Faculty and an associate fellow of the Royal Historical Society. His research focuses on the intersection of political economy, colonialism, and natural science in the Swedish Empire (1700–1815), alongside a major biography of Emanuel Swedenborg, exploring his theological, scientific, and political thought.
Education: DPhil in History from the University of Oxford (2022), followed by an AHRC postdoctoral fellowship at Oxford before moving to JYU. His work bridges early modern science, religion, and political economy with attention to race, environmental history, and literature.
Research interests include:
- History of science, medicine, and religion (1500–1900)
- Political economy & colonialism in early modern Europe
- Natural history and environmental thought
- History of the body, race, and sexuality
- Literary satire and cosmological writing
Publications span monographs and articles in Annals of Science, Intellectual History Review, and Revue de Synthèse, with a focus on Swedish imperial science and Swedenborgian studies. His ERC project rethinks economic theories through colonial and environmental lenses.
