Sumita Mukherjee is Professor of Modern History at the University of Bristol's Department of History. Her research explores transnational South Asian migration (19th-20th century), examining intersections of race, gender, and empire. She leads AHRC-funded projects on colonial mariners ('Mariners: Religion, Race and Empire in British Ports') and diaspora networks ('Remaking Britain: South Asian Connections').
She holds a BA from Durham University and an MSt/DPhil from the University of Oxford. Her publications include Nationalism, Education and Migrant Identities (2009) and Indian Suffragettes (2018).
Research Focus: Mukherjee investigates colonial-era mobility, identity politicization, and transnational feminist networks. Her current work analyzes child migration patterns and maritime labor in imperial ports.
