Ian Campbell is a Senior Lecturer in History at Queen's University Belfast (QUB), affiliated with the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics. He specializes in early modern British and Irish history, focusing on political thought, intellectual history, and the history of race. His work bridges European intellectual traditions, particularly Catholic and Protestant political theories, and has been supported by a €1.3 million European Research Council grant for the 'War and Supernatural in Early Modern Europe' project (2016-2021).
He teaches courses on Irish history, the history of race, and early modern political thought. Notable works include Renaissance Humanism and Ethnicity before Race (2013) and Protestant Politics beyond Calvin (2022). He currently supervises Mr. Joseph Dunlap and has served as an external examiner for Aberdeen University.
His research emphasizes the intersection of religion and state power, challenging historical narratives of Calvinist militarism and exploring Franciscan Scotist theology's role in shaping war and political thought. Key themes include just war theory, scholasticism, and the sacralization of early modern institutions.
