Sophie Smith is an Associate Professor of Political Theory at the University of Oxford's Department of Politics and International Relations and a Tutorial Fellow at University College. She serves as an Executive Editor of the Journal of the History of Ideas and holds a PhD, MPhil, and BA from the University of Cambridge.
Her research examines early modern political ideas (e.g., citizenship, empire, Hobbes) and 20th-century intellectual history, with a focus on feminist theory. She analyzes archival materials to trace feminist responses to enduring questions about labor, social reproduction, and collective action. She is currently editing The Cambridge History of Democracy, 1200–1800 and explores intersections between academic and activist approaches to political theory.
Her publications investigate women's roles in intellectual history, poetic and narrative forms in political discourse, and democratic theory from antiquity to modernity. Recent work emphasizes feminist historiographical methods and critiques of political science's historical language.
Awards include the Selma V. Forkosch Prize and APSA award. She advises doctoral students on topics like feminist political thought and is on leave until 2026.
