Timothy John Stuart-Buttle is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Politics at the University of York, where he has worked since 2017. Stuart-Buttle’s research spans early modern European intellectual history, focusing on intersections between moral philosophy, theology, economics, sociology, and political thought. He examines debates on human (un)sociability, the role of classical scepticism in shaping British thought, and the evolution of recognition theory from Hobbes to Hegel.
His recent publications address themes like Cicero’s influence on Locke, gratitude in Hobbes’ Leviathan, and Gibbon’s historiographical legacy. These works reflect his expertise in classical reception, moral philosophy, and early modern interdisciplinary discourse.
- Fellow of Clare Hall
Stuart-Buttle supervises PhD students in European intellectual history, political theory, and related fields. He has led and participated in numerous academic activities, including organizing conferences on recognition theory and presenting at international events like the IMEMS conference.
