Ere Nokkala is an Associate Professor in the History of Social and Economic Thought at the University of Jyväskylä's Department of History and Ethnology, within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. His research focuses on early modern political economy, natural law, and the Enlightenment, with particular attention to transnational perspectives and Swedish imperial contexts.
Education: MA in History (University of Jyväskylä, 2004); PhD in History (European University Institute, Florence, 2010). Professional experience includes fellowships at institutions such as the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (Uppsala) and the Göttingen Institute for Advanced Study.
Research interests include 18th-century Swedish political economy, natural law traditions, and the globalization of Enlightenment discourse. He currently leads the ERC Consolidator Grant project DEPE ('De-Centring Eighteenth-Century Political Economy'), challenging canonical narratives by emphasizing colonial connections, transnational networks, and cultural approaches to intellectual history.
Publications include monographs like From Natural Law to Political Economy (2019) and co-edited volumes on Cameralism and the Enlightenment. He is active in academic leadership roles, serving on the executive committee of the European Society for the History of Political Thought and co-convening the Online Enlightenment Club.
