Dr. Iain McDaniel is an Associate Professor in Intellectual History within the Department of History at the University of Sussex's School of Media, Arts and Humanities. He specializes in European political thought, with a particular focus on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Prior to joining Sussex in September 2013, he held positions at the University of Cambridge (where he held a British Academic Postdoctoral Fellowship), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, and University College London.
His research interests include:
- Scottish Enlightenment, particularly Adam Ferguson
- Caesarism and democracy in the long nineteenth century
- Political economy
- Conceptual history of 'ochlocracy'
- Ideas of empire, war, peace, and commerce during the Enlightenment
- History of historiography, especially in post-Napoleonic Germany
