Victoria Thompson

Victoria Thompson is a Professor and Chair of the School of History and Sociology at the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, Georgia Institute of Technology. Her academic career spans over two decades, focusing on cultural and social history with a particular emphasis on European and French contexts.

Thompson holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. in History from the University of California, Berkeley.

Her research explores intersections between urban space, travel narratives, and gender/sexuality studies. Key themes include the role of emotion in identity formation, political culture in 18th-19th century France, and colonial dynamics in Algeria. She has authored monographs such as The Virtuous Marketplace (2000) and co-edited Women in Nineteenth-Century Europe (2004).

Thompson has held leadership roles including President of the Society for French Historical Studies and co-chair of the Advanced Placement European History Curriculum Committee. She has also served on grant selection committees for Fulbright Fellowships and the International Dissertation Research Fellowship.
