Professor Veronique Filippi is an academic at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), holding a position in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology and International Health within the Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health. Her research focuses on improving maternal and newborn health in low- and middle-income countries, particularly addressing obstetric complications, climate change impacts, and healthcare quality. She leads projects such as CHAMNHA and HIGH Horizons, investigating extreme heat effects on pregnancy outcomes in Africa, and coordinates the CLIMACH interest group.
Education: PhD from LSHTM (2000), Postgraduate Diploma in Demography (Pantheon-Sorbonne University, 1986-87), BA in Political Sciences (Sciences Po, 1982-85).
Teaching: Supervises PhD students on maternal health topics and teaches Study Design and Current Issues in Maternal and Perinatal Health modules. Former academic lead for the online MSc in Sexual and Reproductive Health Policy and Programming, partnered with the University of Ghana.
Grants: Active funding includes Climate Heat and Maternal and Neonatal Health in Africa (CHAMNHA) and HIGH Horizons projects. Recent collaborations involve evaluating interventions like the STAR project in South Africa for respectful care in maternity units.
Labs/Teams: Member of PRECISE/DYAD network and REFRAME team addressing UK maternity inequalities. Leads maternal morbidity research and co-designs climate adaptation strategies.
