Venelin Ganev is a Professor of Political Science and Graduate Studies Director at Miami University, affiliated with the Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies. He holds a PhD from the University of Chicago (2000) and has taught at Miami University since 2001, advancing from Assistant Professor (2001-2007) to Associate (2007-2015) and full Professor (2015-present). His research focuses on communism, postcommunism, constitutionalism, and comparative politics, with expertise in Eastern European democratization, populism, and institutional transformation.
His scholarly work spans over four decades, addressing themes such as postcommunist state-building, constitutional dynamics, and the interplay between ideas and political change. Notable contributions include analyses of Bulgaria's political trajectory, the 1989 revolutions, and the challenges of democratic governance in post-accession Eastern Europe. He regularly teaches courses on comparative politics, communism, and the rule of law.
Publications highlight critical examinations of neoliberalism, memory politics, and authoritarian tendencies, including works in Journal of Cold War Studies, Demokratizatsiya, and Slavic Review. Ganev’s interdisciplinary approach integrates historical, sociological, and institutional perspectives to explain political phenomena in post-Soviet spaces.
