Affiliations
Benjamin M. Sutcliffe is a Professor in the Department of German, Russian, Asian, and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures at Miami University and a Faculty Associate at the Havighurst Center for East European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies. He specializes in contemporary Russian literature, with a focus on women’s prose, everyday life studies, and Georgian literature in Russian.
Educational Background
He earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy in Slavic Languages and Literatures from the University of Pittsburgh (2004), with a cultural studies certificate and a dissertation on Russian women writers’ narratives of everyday life. His M.A. (2004) and B.A. (1996) degrees are also in Slavic and English literature, respectively, from the University of Pittsburgh and Reed College.
Research Focus
Sutcliffe’s work explores themes of trauma, identity, and cultural memory in post-Soviet literature, particularly through case studies of authors like Liudmila Ulitskaya, Iurii Trifonov, and Georgian-Russian writers. His research often bridges literary analysis with historical and sociocultural contexts, with recent projects focusing on the South Caucasus region and migrant narratives.

Professional Contributions
He teaches advanced Russian language courses and interdisciplinary seminars on Russian literature. His co-authored book Ludmila Ulitskaya and the Art of Tolerance (2015) was widely reviewed, while his monograph Empire of Objects: Iurii Trifonov and the Material World of Soviet Culture (2023) examines late Soviet material culture. Current projects include a monograph on South Caucasus Russophone prose and trauma studies in Armenian author Narine Abgarian’s work.
