Hannah Chapman is the Theodore Romanoff Assistant Professor of Russian Studies and Assistant Professor in International & Area Studies at the University of Oklahoma's David L. Boren College of International Studies. She concurrently holds the Karen and Adeed Dawisha Assistant Professorship in Political Science at Miami University, Ohio, and is affiliated with the Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies. Her research focuses on comparative political behavior, with emphasis on public opinion dynamics in authoritarian regimes, particularly in Russia and post-Soviet states.
Education includes a PhD in Political Science, with extensive fieldwork across Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Georgia. Her book project examines how authoritarian regimes use quasi-democratic participation mechanisms to reinforce power. Key publications include analyses of democratic conceptualization gaps and Russian propaganda effects in Kyrgyzstan.
Notable awards include the 2017 APSA Best Conference Paper award for 'Shoring Up Autocracy.' Her research bridges academia and policy through fellowships like the Kennan Institute's George F. Kennan Fellowship. She has organized high-profile engagements with regional leaders like Kyrgyzstan's ex-president Roza Otunbayeva and Russian opposition figure Leonid Volkov.
Current projects address democratic decline's impact on individual democracy conceptualization in post-Soviet regions. She navigates pandemic-era research challenges by innovating data collection methods while maintaining ethical standards.
