Ulrico Agnati (born 1968) is a Full Professor of Roman Law and Foundations of European Law (GIUR-15/A) at the Department of Economics, Society, and Politics (DESP) of the University of Urbino Carlo Bo. He serves as President of the University Quality Board (Presidio della Qualità di Ateneo) and teaches Roman Foundations of European Law in the Political Science, Economics and Government degree program. Previously, he has taught at the University of Parma where he instructed courses on European Legal Roots, Legal Informatics, and Roman Law Institutions.
Dr. Agnati received his degree in Ancient Literature and Culture from the University of Pavia (1990) and completed his PhD in Ancient History (1995) through a collaboration between the Universities of Pisa, Pavia, and Perugia. He later earned his Law Degree from the University of Urbino (2002) and was admitted to the Bar (2005). His academic journey includes being a student at the Collegio Borromeo of Pavia, a scholarship holder at ISTOL (Italian Institute for the History of Legislation), and a tutor at CEDANT (Center for Studies and Research on Ancient Rights) at IUSS of Pavia.
His research focuses on Roman law and European legal foundations from historical and contemporary perspectives, with particular attention to the relationship between law, politics, and religion. His scholarly activities extend to European Union institutions and law, legal thought, and various legal institutions. He has made significant contributions to understanding the historical development of legal concepts and their modern applications, especially in areas related to land law, sustainability, and religious freedom.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent scholarly output across multiple journals and edited volumes, showing particular expertise in late antique legal transformations, the intersection of Roman and Christian legal thought, and the historical foundations of contemporary European legal concepts. His work often employs interdisciplinary approaches combining legal history, political theory, and religious studies to provide nuanced analyses of complex legal phenomena.
Professor Agnati serves in numerous academic leadership roles including as a member of the Doctoral School Committee in Legal Sciences at the Universities of Modena-Reggio Emilia and Parma, and as Vice President of the Parma Section of the International Association for Late Antique Studies (AIST). He is also Co-director of the series 'Problemi e Ricerche di Storia Antica' and serves on the editorial boards of multiple prominent journals including Tesserae Iuris, Studi Urbinati, and Rivista di Diritto Romano.
As an active researcher, he has collaborated on significant projects including the European Research Council's REDHIS project (Rediscovering the Hidden Structure) and served as a member of the University Center of Bioethics at the University of Parma. His academic service extends to being a reviewer for the Ministry of University and Research and numerous national and international journals, as well as being listed in the Experts Evaluation Register (AVA) for his disciplinary profile.
