معرفی
Dario Mantovani is a distinguished legal historian elected in 2018 to the chair Law, Culture and Society in Ancient Rome at the Collège de France. He is a Professor of Roman Law at the University of Pavia, having returned there in 1997 after teaching at the universities of Trento and Parma. His academic career spans prestigious institutions including the École française de Rome (where he serves as Chairman of the Scientific Council for 2024-2028), Università della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano (where he has taught Late Antique institutional history since 2016), and numerous French institutions including EPHE, EHESS, Paris-I and Paris-II.
Mantovani's research focuses on Roman law as both a technique of thought and expression of Roman society. His work explores the literary dimension of Roman jurists' works, the persistence of classical Roman law in Late Antiquity, legal historiography, and the conceptual lexicon of law. His scholarly approach invites readers to engage directly with ancient documents to rediscover the world of ancient Rome and understand the European legal tradition's roots.
His publications reveal a strong focus on Roman legal culture, juristic authority, and the relationship between public and private law in ancient Rome. Mantovani's work bridges historical analysis with contemporary relevance, examining how Roman legal thought continues to influence modern European legal systems. His research demonstrates particular expertise in rhetorical aspects of Roman jurisprudence and the cultural dimensions of legal practice in antiquity.
