Ty Cashion

Ty Cashion is a Professor of History at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) in Huntsville, Texas. He has been teaching there since 1999, specializing in American history with a focus on Texas, the Southwest, and the American West. He holds a Ph.D. in History from Texas Christian University (1993), an M.A. from The University of Texas at Arlington (1989), and a B.A. in Economics from Austin College (1979).

His research interests include Texas intellectual history, frontier studies, and the interplay between traditionalism and progressivism in regional narratives. He is a renowned scholar with notable works such as Lone Star Mind: Reimagining Texas History (2018) and A Texas Frontier: The Clear Fork Country and Fort Griffin (1996). Cashion is the sole historian member of the Texas Institute of Letters, a prestigious literary honor society, and holds fellowships from the Texas State Historical Association and the East Texas Historical Association, where he also served as president.

He teaches courses on Texas history, the American West, and borderlands studies at both undergraduate and graduate levels. His publications blend academic rigor with accessible narratives, including institutional histories like Sam Houston State University: An Institutional Memory (2004), which was praised as a model for academic institutional histories. Cashion’s work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, linking social, cultural, and political dimensions of historical inquiry.
