Trish Reay serves as Professor & Vice-Dean at the Alberta School of Business, University of Alberta, where she also holds the TELUS Chair in Management. Her academic career is deeply rooted at the University of Alberta, having earned both her PhD and MBA from the same institution.
Her research focuses on organizational and institutional change, organizational learning, professions and professional work, and identity and role identity. Dr. Reay examines how individuals and organizations navigate complex change processes, with particular attention to how people become entrenched in polarizing positions and how discourse can devolve into conflict. Her work bridges theoretical organizational studies with practical applications in healthcare, policy, and business contexts.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on polarization dynamics, discourse analysis, and organizational behavior. The 2025 article 'How discussion becomes discord' reveals her systematic approach to understanding the progression from civil discourse to polarized echo chambers through three distinct phases, offering practical interventions at each stage to prevent destructive polarization.
Dr. Reay has received research funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to support her work on organizational dynamics and polarization. Her research collaboration includes scholars from Neoma Business School, Florida Atlantic University, and the University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business.
