Trine Syvertsen is a Professor at the Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo, and a leading scholar in media history, policy, and digital media. She holds a PhD from the University of Leicester and a cand. polit. from the University of Bergen. Her research focuses on media resistance, digital disconnection, and the Nordic media welfare state, with notable works like Digital Detox (2020) and The Media Welfare State (2014). She has held significant administrative roles, including Chair of the Board at Oslo Metropolitan University (2015–2023) and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at UiO (2007–2014).
Her research explores societal responses to digital media, including critiques of media overuse and strategies for disconnection. She co-edited The Digital Backlash and the Paradoxes of Disconnection (2024), analyzing trends in digital disengagement. Syvertsen’s work bridges media policy, cultural studies, and societal impacts, emphasizing the role of media in Nordic welfare systems.
Key projects include the Digitox initiative (2019–2024), investigating intrusive media and digital detox practices. She has also contributed to understanding public service broadcasting’s evolving role in the digital age through collaborative projects like Media Companies and the Public Interest.
Syvertsen’s publications span academic journals and books, addressing topics like media ambivalence, smartphone use, and the environmental impact of media consumption. She is an editorial board member of Convergence, Nordicom Review, and Norsk medietidsskrift.
