Dr. Tom Vaughan is a Lecturer in International Security at the University of Leeds' School of Politics and International Studies (POLIS), part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. He joined in September 2024 following roles at Aberystwyth University (Lecturer in Strategy and Intelligence, 2022–24) and the University of Exeter (Associate Lecturer, 2021–22). His PhD from Aberystwyth University (2022) focuses on International Politics.
Research Interests:
Vaughan specializes in nuclear futures, particularly how imaginaries of nuclear disarmament shape policy. He examines nuclear weapons/energy in Africa (with a focus on South Africa) and interdisciplinary approaches to transformative global futures. His current project, 'Theories of Change and Nuclear Disarmament' (funded via NETIAS/CAT), explores non-IR concepts of change and intersections with climate politics. He also studies pedagogical methods for teaching nuclear threats and global disruption.
