Marianne Hanson is a Lecturer in International Relations and Director of the Rotary Centre for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution at the University of Queensland's School of Political Science and International Studies. She joined UQ in 1995 after serving as a Stipendiary Lecturer in Politics at Magdalen College, Oxford University, and has maintained a distinguished academic career with visiting positions at the Liu Centre for Global Issues (UBC), University of Wales, and Sciences Po Paris.
Her educational background includes a Bachelor (Honours) of Arts from the University of Queensland, followed by a Masters and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oxford. This strong foundation has supported her extensive research career focused on critical security studies and nuclear disarmament.
Dr Hanson's research examines international security through a critical lens, with particular emphasis on arms control and disarmament (especially nuclear weapons elimination), European security institutions like NATO and OSCE, human rights frameworks including the International Criminal Court, and normative International Relations theory. Her work consistently explores the intersection of humanitarian concerns with traditional security frameworks, as evidenced by her current book project 'Humanitarianism and nuclear weapons: building a global prohibition regime without the great powers'.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a clear scholarly trajectory toward humanitarian approaches to nuclear disarmament, with increasing focus on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and the humanitarian initiative in nuclear weapons policy. Her work bridges theoretical frameworks from the 'English School' of International Relations with practical policy concerns in arms control.
Among her notable scientific contributions is her leadership of the Rotary Centre for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution, where she has fostered research on disarmament and peacebuilding. Her scholarly work has significantly contributed to understanding the normative shifts in nuclear weapons policy.
Dr Hanson has supervised numerous PhD candidates across diverse security topics, serving as Principal Advisor for projects on non-state armed groups, preventive diplomacy, multilateralism and terrorism, and disarmament diplomacy. She has also served as Associate Advisor for research on visual politics of nuclear tests, nuclear harm ethics, military medical norms, and post-conflict reconstruction. Her supervision record demonstrates commitment to mentoring the next generation of security scholars.
Her laboratory and research team work primarily through the Rotary Centre for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution, where she directs collaborative research on disarmament and peacebuilding initiatives. This institutional platform supports her ongoing work on nuclear weapons prohibition and humanitarian approaches to security.
