Dr. Tom Simmert is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology and African Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. His research focuses on popular music, culture, and digital media in Nigeria and South Africa, particularly examining the global distribution of African pop music genres like Afrobeats and Amapiano. He is part of the IFEAS research team and the BMBF-funded CEDITRAA project, investigating content creators on platforms such as TikTok and their role in popularizing African music through Afro-dance content.
