Dr. Naomi Andrew Haruna is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Maiduguri's Department of Visual and Performing Arts, specializing in Cultural Sustainability (Visual Communication). She holds a PhD from the University of Maiduguri, a Master's in Advertising and Marketing from Coventry University (UK), and a Bachelor's in Creative Arts (Graphics) from the University of Maiduguri. Her research focuses on qualitative methodologies addressing peacebuilding, environmental sustainability, gender equality, and arts education through culturally rooted visual practices. Recent projects include using digital storytelling to combat tree felling and promoting peace among Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Northeast Nigeria.
Research Interests
Her work spans Peace Media, Development Communication, Afro-Popular Music, and Gender Studies. She examines cultural hierarchies in Nigerian music, particularly the interplay between Afrobeats, regional identities, and religious norms. Notable discussions include the role of music in Nigerian weddings, the influence of colonial aesthetics, and the global reach of Afrobeats despite regional divides.
Collaborations
Naomi held a 2023 research fellowship at CRC 1472 (Germany), contributing Nigerian perspectives to studies on gender regimes in pop music. She collaborated with Ghanaian students on Highlife music projects, emphasizing African dance culture's centrality to musical expression.
