Prof. Dr. Florian Heesch is a Professor of Musicology at the University of Siegen, specializing in Metal Music Studies, Gender and Sexuality in Music, and Popular Music History. He has held academic roles since 2013 at the University of Siegen, expanding his focus to Popular Music and Gender Studies in 2015. His research bridges the gap between 'High' and 'Low' cultural forms, particularly through investigations into sentimental ballads and their intersections with popular music history.
He leads multiple DFG-funded projects, including A04 Low Pop global: Schlager und Highlife, AG5 Somatik des Populären, and AG8 Globaldimension des Populären. His career path includes roles in Düsseldorf, Hannover, Frankfurt, and Göteborg, with a focus on Scandinavian cultural reception and gender studies in music.
Research interests include cultural hybridity (e.g., Faroese ballads fused with metal), music technology's impact on vocal performance, and the role of gender in aggressive metal vocals. His work spans methodological explorations (e.g., situational analysis in popular music) and global case studies like Nigerian pop music and Ghanaian highlife education in German academia.
Publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches, from theological interpretations of Christian music to intermedial analyses of black metal. He collaborates internationally, evidenced by co-authored works with scholars like Naomi Haruna and Theresa Nink.
