Tom Ainsworth is a Principal Lecturer and Subject Lead for Architecture and Design at the University of Brighton's School of Architecture, Technology and Engineering. He holds affiliations with the Centre for Arts and Wellbeing and the Radical Methodologies (RaM) Research Excellence Group. His academic career includes roles as an External Examiner for multiple prestigious institutions, including the Royal College of Art and University College London. Ainsworth earned his PhD in Design from the University of Brighton (2013), focusing on persuasive design theory for healthcare engagement.
Research interests center on sustainable design, social innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Notable projects include the British Academy-funded 'ANTICIPATE' initiative addressing climate hazards in India, and the EU TEMPUS-funded 'IDEA' project enhancing engineering-design-business collaboration. He has supervised over 10 doctoral students, with recent focuses on equity in design, sustainable food systems, and public breastfeeding advocacy.
Teaching philosophy emphasizes empowering students through critical decision-making frameworks, leading courses in sustainable design since 2014. External roles include peer review for the Design Research Society and Systemic Design Association, alongside validation work for the Maltese Further and Higher Education Authority.
