Harriet Atkinson is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Brighton, and leads the Centre for Design History's research strand on Design Activism. She holds a PhD from the Royal College of Art/Victoria & Albert Museum's History of Design program (2006) and teaches on MA Curating Collections and Heritage. Her research focuses on art/design for propaganda, protest, cultural diplomacy, and exhibition histories. She has led major projects including the AHRC-funded 'Materialisation of Persuasion' (2019-23), producing books, films, and exhibitions. Notable outputs include the award-winning documentary Art on the Streets (2023), exploring interwar British art activism, and Show Resistance (2024), examining WWII-era exhibitions.
Education: BA (Hons) English & History of Art (University of York), MA Art Museum Studies (Courtauld Institute), PhD History of Design (Royal College of Art/V&A).
Awards include University of Brighton's Research Excellence Award (2024), and her work has been supported by UKRI, FAPESP, and the Andrew Mellon Foundation. She serves on the Editorial Board of Journal of Design History and advises Bloomsbury Design Library. Current projects include the 'Graphic Design Histories for Creative Dissent' (2024-2027) and 'Decolonising the Archive' (2025).
Her teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including critical perspectives on exhibitions and professional museum practice. She has supervised over a dozen PhDs on topics like Cold War photobooks and conscientious objector art.
Media engagement includes BBC Radio 4 interviews and articles for British Archaeology. She previously advised UK government cultural policy and led grant-making initiatives at institutions like the Heritage Lottery Fund.
