Andrea Potts serves as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for Design History within the School of Humanities and Social Science, investigating how European museum exhibitions mediate public engagement with colonial histories. Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, her work critically analyzes the practical implementation of decolonization discourses in exhibition practices while addressing the neglected dimension of audience impact.
Her academic qualifications include:
- Master of Cultural Heritage Studies from University College London (awarded October 31, 2019)
- Bachelor of History from the University of Cambridge (awarded June 30, 2013)
Potts' research spans Museum Studies, Decolonization, and Exhibition Studies with specific focus on European Colonialism representation. She argues that European museums' experimental approaches to exhibiting colonialism operate within ill-defined decolonization frameworks, necessitating audience-centered evaluations to understand real-world impacts on public comprehension of colonial legacies.
Her 2022 publication in Third Text reviewing the Migration Museum's 'Departures' exhibition exemplifies her analytical approach to migration narratives and colonial representation. Collectively, her work reveals persistent challenges in translating decolonization theory into exhibition practice while highlighting the critical role of audience perspectives in evaluating institutional success.
No scientific awards are documented, though her research receives Arts and Humanities Research Council funding. Professional roles include Exhibition Curator at The Museum of Richmond (2018-2019), Senior Policy Advisor at the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (2014-2018), and ongoing collaboration with The Museum of British Colonialism since 2019.
She actively partners with cultural institutions including the Migration Museum and The Museum of British Colonialism, recently presenting research at The Museum of British Colonialism in October 2021. Her work bridges academic analysis with practical museum development through exhibition curation and policy advising.
