Dr. Tom Payne is Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for the BA (Hons) Acting & Performance at Sheffield Hallam University's Creative Industries Institute. Holding a BA, MA, PhD, and PGCE PcET, he has over 20 years' experience in higher education and professional theatre. As Co-Director of Doppelgangster, he creates socially engaged performances addressing ecological crises.
Research explores:
- Interdisciplinary climate communication through performance
- Participatory methodologies in community-engaged art
- Hydro-social relationships in environmental practice
- Dramaturgies of extinction and ecological crisis
Publications examine performance as ecological activism and autonomous cultural production. Current projects include Ark (interdisciplinary climate dialogues) and Storm-Cloud (art-science environmental education).
Honors include Senior Fellowship of HEA and FRSA. He serves as Environmental Champion for Forced Entertainment and external examiner for Rose Bruford College.
Projects span international performances including Everybody Loses (2017), Radio Plague (2020), and TREEFXXXERS (2018). Supervises PhD candidates in performance-ecology intersections.
