Sally Sutherland is a Lecturer and Research Student at the University of Brighton's School of Arch, Tech and Eng, affiliated with the Centre for Design History. Her work focuses on design's role in health inequities, maternal voices, and systemic exclusion, with a practice-based PhD funded by the AHRC. She holds an MA in Sustainable Design (2018) and a BA in Three-Dimensional Design (2002). Her research integrates feminist, decolonial, and reflexive approaches to challenge biomedical narratives.
Education: MA Sustainable Design (University of Brighton, 2018), BA Three-Dimensional Design (Leeds Beckett University, 2002). External roles include External Examiner for Design programs at Arts University Bournemouth and Sustainability in Design Strand Lead for the Centre for Design History.
Research interests span design justice, maternal health, breastfeeding infrastructure, and class-based disparities. Her projects include the Floor Flag public art installations addressing infant feeding spaces and the 'Mo-Design' podcast exploring feminist academia. She advocates for inclusive design practices through radical methodologies and transdisciplinary collaboration.
Teaching emphasizes relational, experimental approaches with workshops and material exploration. Industry experience includes 15+ years in lighting design and product development across the UK and Australia, working with firms like Pinniger and Partners and KRD – Kitchen Rogers Design.
