Nicholas Gant is a Principal Lecturer at the University of Brighton's School of Art and Media, specializing in social and sustainable design. His research focuses on design's role in addressing global challenges such as biodiversity loss, circular economies, and community well-being. He has collaborated with over 50 organizations, including the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and UNESCO, to develop innovative solutions through design and technology. Gant co-directs the Centre for Arts and Wellbeing and leads the Community21 research group, fostering interdisciplinary projects with international partners.
His work integrates practice-based methods, emphasizing tangible outcomes like products, systems, and spaces that promote environmental and social change. Notable projects include rewilding initiatives, waste valorization strategies, and participatory community planning. Gant has secured funding from major bodies like the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and EPSRC, contributing to policy shifts and economic support for charities.
As an educator, Gant teaches across art, design, and environmental disciplines, co-developed the University’s MA in Sustainable Design, and supervises PhD students. He serves as an external examiner at institutions like the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins, ensuring academic rigor and innovation in design education.
