Timothy James is a Senior Teaching Fellow in Law at the Surrey Law School, part of the University of Surrey. Previously, he served as a Senior Lecturer in Law at Birmingham City University from 1993 to 2017. He holds a BA (Hons) in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford (1982) and a Certificate in Education in HE from the University of Central England (1994). His professional career includes practising as a corporate solicitor in London and Birmingham from 1983 to 1993.
As Academic Integrity Officer at Surrey, he oversees ethical standards in academic work. His research focuses on Medical Law and Ethics, including the application of ethical theory to medico-legal cases, reform of clinical negligence law, and the development of student feedback literacy in legal education. He has also contributed to debates on informed consent in medical practice and legal frameworks for biomedical ethics.
Teaching responsibilities include Company Law, International Corporate Law, and Medical Law. His publications span bioethics, clinical negligence, and legal aspects of endoscopic procedures, emphasizing interdisciplinary dialogue between law and healthcare ethics.
