Timothy J. Lyons

Timothy J. Lyons, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Medicine. He returned to MUSC in 2017 as Chief of Endocrinology and the inaugural holder of the John Colwell Endowed Chair in Endocrinology, continuing research initiated during his 1990s tenure there. A leading diabetes researcher, Lyons played a pivotal role in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) and its long-term follow-up, focusing on vascular complications of type 1 diabetes and cardiovascular disease prevention.

His work spans three decades of clinical and laboratory research, including establishing a multispecialty diabetes center at the University of Oklahoma (2000s-2017) and collaborating with Native American tribes to enhance diabetes care. At MUSC, he oversees the analysis of DCCT biological samples, correlating historical clinical data with modern insights to safeguard the trial's legacy and mentor the next generation of investigators.

The DCCT, which he helped launch, demonstrated that aggressive glucose management reduces short-term complications by 70% and shows long-term cardiovascular benefits.
