Dr. Timothy Heffernan is a Lecturer in Anthropology and Development Studies at the School of Archaeology and Anthropology, Australian National University (ANU). His research focuses on communities' responses to crises, including environmental disasters, economic collapses, and political upheavals, emphasizing recovery, kinship, and ambiguity in human resilience. He holds a Ph.D. in Social Science (Anthropology).
Key works include Compassionate solidarity: Crisis, recovery and kincentric politics in Iceland (forthcoming) and co-editing The anthropology of ambiguity (2024). He leads projects on disaster recovery, mental health post-bushfires, and housing resilience policies. He teaches courses like ANTH2027 (Ethnographic Methods) and ANTH8059 (Applied Anthropology).
Grants include leading evaluations of Psychological First Aid in Schools (MRFF NHMRC, 2025-27) and housing recovery policies (AHURI, 2023-24). His work bridges anthropology, policy, and community-driven solutions for crisis recovery.
