Dr. Timothy Canty is an Associate Professor and Director of the MEES program at the University of Maryland (College Park). His work bridges atmospheric science with policy, focusing on air quality, stratospheric ozone recovery, and climate change impacts. Collaborations include epidemiologists studying air pollution's effects on fetal health and business faculty developing climate finance risk frameworks.
He leads research using satellite/surface observations to evaluate photochemical models, with funding from NASA, DOE, NIH, and Maryland state agencies. His team operates the Mesoterps micronet for hyperlocal air quality monitoring and contributed to executive education programs in climate finance.
Key areas include ozone chemistry dynamics, carbon capture co-benefits, wildfire impact modeling, and health disparities linked to air pollution. Recent work highlights how pandemic lockdowns altered emissions and ozone formation patterns across urban regions like Baltimore and New York.
