Russell R. Dickerson is a Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science at the University of Maryland, College Park. His research focuses on atmospheric chemistry, air pollution, climate science, and global biogeochemical cycles with a particular emphasis on greenhouse gases and environmental justice. He leads the Regional Atmospheric Measurement Modeling and Prediction Program (RAMMPP) and co-directs the NIST-supported Flux of Atmospheric Greenhouse Gases in Maryland (FLAGG-MD) project. His work integrates field measurements, aircraft observations, and satellite data to understand ozone budgets, pollutant transport, and climate interactions. Dickerson collaborates with NASA, NOAA, and NIST on projects such as the KORUS-AQ mission. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Michigan (1980) and completed postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany. Current research includes studying pollution in urban areas like Baltimore and NYC, methane emissions from natural gas operations, and the impact of wildfires on air quality. Dickerson advises graduate students in AOSC and Chemistry, focusing on analytical instrument development and environmental policy implications.
Education: A.B. in Chemistry, University of Chicago (1975); Ph.D. in Chemistry, University of Michigan (1980). Professional affiliations include the NASA OMI Science Team and the Maryland Climate Change Commission. His research platforms include a modified Cessna 402B aircraft for atmospheric sampling.
