Dr. Christopher D. Holmes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science at Florida State University (FSU). His research focuses on global cycles of air pollutants, greenhouse gases, and their interactions with climate change, utilizing numerical models and observational data from satellites, aircraft, and ground networks. Key research areas include ozone-biosphere interactions, biomass burning impacts, Arctic chemistry, and mercury biogeochemistry. He earned a Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Science from Harvard University (2010) and joined FSU in 2014 after postdoctoral work at UC Irvine. Dr. Holmes is an NSF CAREER Award recipient and NASA New Investigator.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Science, Harvard University (2010)
- Postdoctoral Researcher, University of California, Irvine (2010–2014)
Research Interests: Dr. Holmes’s work integrates atmospheric modeling with observational data to address critical environmental challenges. His group examines ozone deposition mechanisms, wildfire emissions, and climate feedbacks in Arctic systems. Recent studies include analyzing brown carbon in wildfire plumes, sulfur chemistry in marine environments, and the role of heterogeneous reactions in aerosol formation. He collaborates extensively with field campaigns like FIREX-AQ and leverages satellite data for climate and air quality insights.
Awards & Recognition:
- NSF CAREER Award (202X)
- NASA New Investigator Program Award (202X)
Advising & Grants: While formal student listings are not provided, Dr. Holmes oversees a research group focused on advancing atmospheric chemistry models and field campaigns. His funding sources include NSF and NASA grants supporting wildfire and Arctic studies.
Labs/Teams: Active in the FSU Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science research community, contributing to interdisciplinary efforts in climate science and air quality modeling.
