Avelino F. Arellano is a Professor in the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Arizona, with joint appointments in Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis, and Chemical and Environmental Engineering. His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Environment and Earth Sciences from Duke University.
Research focuses on investigating human fingerprints in the atmosphere through coupled observation and numerical modeling. Key areas include atmospheric constituents from combustion activities and their impacts on air quality, weather, climate, and the environment. Specific interests encompass atmospheric chemistry, pollution studies, aerosol properties, and Earth system modeling. Recent publications show strong emphasis on wildfire impacts on air quality, ozone pollution dynamics, atmospheric chemistry modeling, and boundary layer processes.
Arellano utilizes advanced modeling approaches including WRF-Chem simulations, ensemble Kalman filtering for data assimilation, and analysis of field campaign data. Recent work examines chemical feedback mechanisms in methane cycles, planetary boundary layer dynamics, and regional air quality issues in the Southwest US.
Research Infrastructure: Utilizes NASA CAMP2Ex campaign data, MOPITT satellite CO measurements, PECAN field campaign observations, and global chemistry-climate models. Collaborates with national agencies including NASA and NSF on atmospheric research projects.
