Rowland Blake is a Professor at the University of California, Irvine leading the Rowland Blake Research Group, which conducts cutting-edge atmospheric chemistry research across global environments including remote Pacific regions, polluted urban centers, and specialized emission zones.
His research focuses on atmospheric composition analysis through whole-air sampling from land, ships, and aircraft platforms. Key interests include trace gas background concentrations, regional/global environmental change, biomass burning impacts, and marine boundary layer dynamics with high biological activity. The group maintains long-term Pacific sampling networks and develops advanced analytical methodologies for atmospheric constituents.
The research program has operated continuously since 1978 with quarterly Pacific air sampling and has participated in NASA/NSF airborne campaigns since 1988. Current activities include the NASA ASIA-AQ Field Mission in Korea alongside collaborators, plus ongoing involvement in NASA KORUS-AQ and NASA FIREX-AQ projects examining air quality and fire emissions impacts.
