Timo V. Ovaska serves as the Hans & Ella McCollum '21 Vahlteich Professor of Chemistry at Connecticut College, where he has been a distinguished faculty member since 1990. His career combines exceptional research in organic chemistry with dedicated undergraduate teaching and mentorship.
Professor Ovaska received his M.S. from the University of Turku and his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut, establishing the foundation for his research in synthetic organic chemistry. His educational background positioned him to make significant contributions to the field of organic synthesis.
His research program centers on developing innovative methodologies for constructing complex polycyclic ring systems, with particular expertise in seven-membered (cycloheptane) and eight-membered ring-containing natural products. Professor Ovaska's work has significant medicinal implications, as these compounds often exhibit anti-tumor, anti-HIV, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. His laboratory has pioneered the use of tandem oxyanionic cyclization/Claisen rearrangement sequences, particularly enhanced by microwave irradiation, to efficiently synthesize challenging ring systems found in biologically active natural products like the frondosins, phorbols, and guanacastepenes.
