Tanya L. Schneider serves as the Hans and Ella McCollum '21 Vahlteich Associate Professor of Chemistry and Chair of the Chemistry Department at Connecticut College, where she has been a faculty member since 2010. She holds a Ph.D. from Yale University and completed postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School funded by the American Cancer Society. Prior to joining Connecticut College, she was on the faculty at Smith College and worked in the biotech industry.
Professor Schneider's research focuses on the biosynthesis and molecular recognition of natural products, with particular emphasis on antibiotics and bacterial quorum sensing molecules. Her laboratory employs techniques from chemistry, molecular biology and biochemistry to develop new approaches for mitigating antibiotic resistance. She has successfully integrated undergraduate researchers into her work, with many students appearing as co-authors on her publications.
Her publication record demonstrates consistent research productivity spanning biochemistry, natural products chemistry, and molecular recognition. The articles show an evolution from fundamental biochemical mechanisms toward increasingly applied research in antibiotic resistance and bacterial communication systems. Many publications feature undergraduate co-authors, highlighting her commitment to involving students in meaningful research.
- Helen Mulvey Faculty Award for Fostering Student Achievement (2016)
- Cottrell College Science Award from Research Corporation for Science Advancement (2011) for 'Disarming bacteria through inhibition of the biosynthesis of quorum sensing signal molecules'
Professor Schneider actively mentors undergraduate researchers in her laboratory and has developed innovative biochemistry course content that connects classroom learning with current research. She serves as the department's advisor for Northern Hemisphere study abroad programs and is a member of both the American Chemical Society and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Her educational background includes a B.A. from Williams College and M.S./Ph.D. from Yale University.
