معرفی
Marc Zimmer is the Jean C. Tempel '65 Professor of Chemistry at Connecticut College, where he has taught since 1990. A leading expert in Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) research, he bridges computational chemistry and biomedical applications, with work impacting cancer imaging, environmental monitoring, and neuroscience.
Education:
- B.S., M.S., University of Witwatersrand, South Africa
- Ph.D., Worcester Polytechnic Institute
- Post-Doctorate, Yale University
His research explores GFP's structural and photophysical properties, enabling revolutionary applications like tracking cellular processes and detecting pollution. Zimmer translates complex science through acclaimed books including Glowing Genes (2005) and Illuminating Disease (2015), making bioluminescence accessible to broad audiences.
Scientific Awards:
- Connecticut Professor of the Year (2007)
- John S. King Memorial Award (2001)
- Nancy Batson Nisbet Rash Faculty Research Award (2005)
- John S. Burlew Connecticut Valley Section Award
Zimmer has mentored 72 undergraduates, with 39 co-authoring publications and 50 presenting research. His NIH-funded work includes developing GFP-based tools for cancer detection and environmental sensors. He actively promotes science education through 29 school visits and teacher workshops in recent years, plus leading student research trips to South Africa.
His dedicated GFP research group operates within Connecticut College's advanced chemistry facilities, including NMR and mass spectrometry instrumentation, continuing to pioneer applications in disease imaging and optogenetics.
