Martha J. Grossel is the Jean C. Tempel '65 Professor of Biology at Connecticut College, where she has been a faculty member since 1999. She earned her B.S. from Colorado State University and her Ph.D. from Tufts University School of Medicine, followed by postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School.
Professor Grossel's research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of cancer, particularly how disruptions in cell cycle regulation lead to uncontrolled cellular division. Her work centers on the protein CDK6 and its roles in both cell cycle progression and cellular differentiation processes. She has made significant contributions to understanding how CDK6 interacts with other proteins like EYA2 and mediates important cellular functions.
Grossel's publications reveal a consistent focus on cell cycle regulation, cancer biology, and the expanding role of CDK6 in cellular differentiation. Her research has evolved from studying CDK6's traditional role in the cell cycle to uncovering its novel functions in differentiation processes, particularly in astrocytes. This represents an important paradigm shift in understanding cell cycle proteins and their multifaceted roles in cellular biology.
Among her notable recognitions are the 2016 Nancy Batson Nisbet Rash award for outstanding scholarly accomplishments and being named a 'Woman of Innovation' in 2006 by the Connecticut Technology Council. Her research has been supported by significant grants including multiple NIH awards totaling over $1.2 million and an NSF CAREER grant.
Professor Grossel is deeply committed to undergraduate education and research mentorship. She has guided numerous students through honors theses and co-authored publications with undergraduates. She designed the innovative Pathway in Public Health at Connecticut College and has been instrumental in developing laboratory spaces that encourage collaboration between faculty and students. Her educational contributions extend to creating teaching modules on genomics and proteomics and publishing on effective approaches to incorporating research into classroom learning.
