Tim Winter is a Research Professor at the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation, Deakin University, Melbourne, where he leads research on cultural heritage, urban sustainability, and heritage diplomacy in Asia. He is President of the Association of Critical Heritage Studies and has held visiting scholar positions at the University of Cambridge, The Getty, and the Asia Research Institute, Singapore.
His research focuses on the intersections of heritage with development, urbanization, tourism, and international relations. He has worked with major global institutions including the World Bank, Getty Conservation Institute, and World Monuments Fund, contributing to both theoretical and applied dimensions of heritage policy and practice.
Tim Winter's scholarly work explores how heritage functions as a tool of diplomacy, particularly along the New Silk Road, and how global heritage discourses interact with local practices in East and Southeast Asia. His recent books include The Routledge Handbook of Heritage in Asia and Shanghai Expo: An International Forum on the Future of Cities, reflecting his deep engagement with urban transformation and transnational heritage dynamics.
