Tim O’Dell is a Lecturer in Music at the Osher School of Music, part of the University of Southern Maine’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. He holds a DMA in Saxophone Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa (1999), an MM in Jazz Studies from the New England Conservatory (1992), and a BM in Saxophone Performance from the University of Iowa (1990).
His research focuses on jazz composition, improvisation, and ensemble performance, blending classical, world, and American musical traditions. Notable projects include the Makrokosmos Orchestra (since 2015), a 15-member ensemble premiering his works in NYC, and albums like At War’s End (2013) and The Catalyst (2012).
O’Dell has received grants from the Maine Arts Commission, University of Southern Maine, and others. His career spans performances with legends like Fred Anderson and Tatsu Aoki, NPR’s JazzSet, and international venues in Switzerland, Japan, Portugal, and Greece.
As an educator, he teaches across the University of Maine System and maintains a virtual studio. He previously directed Jazz Studies at Augustana College (IL) and founded the Jazz Composers’ Ensemble at the New England Conservatory.
