Tilman Grune is a German academic specializing in physiological chemistry and cellular biochemistry. He has held prominent roles including Professor of Physiological Chemistry and Cellular Biochemistry at the University of Vienna since 2020 and Scientific Director of the German Institute of Human Nutrition (DIfE) Potsdam-Rehbrücke since 2014. Previously, he served as Chair of Molecular Toxicology (DIfE/University of Potsdam), Chair of Nutritional Toxicology at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, and Chair of Biofunctionality and Food Safety at the University of Hohenheim.
- Diploma in Comparative Analysis of Cytochrome P-450 Liver Isoforms (1986-1987)
- Study of Medical Biochemistry at the II. Medical Institute in Moscow (1981-1987)
- Doctorate in Nucleotide Degradation and Oxygen Radicals (summa cum laude, 1992)
- Habilitation in Secondary Antioxidant Protection Systems (1998)
- Dr. hc from the University of Buenos Aires (2013)
Education:
Research Focus spans oxidative stress mechanisms, lipid peroxidation product degradation (e.g., 4-hydroxynonenal), oxidatively modified protein metabolism, and their implications in aging, ischemia-reoxygenation injury, and nutritional sciences. His work bridges molecular toxicology, cellular biochemistry, and age-related disease pathologies.
Scientific Awards include the SFRR Europe Basic Science Award (2019), Catherine Pasquier Award (2004), and multiple 2003 accolades: René Schubert Prize for Age Research, Skin Aging Research Award, and Paul Gerson Unna Prize.
- DFG Research Grant (1993-1994)
- Honorary Doctorate (Dr.hc) from the University of Buenos Aires (2013)
