Hugo Destaillats

Hugo Destaillats is a Senior Scientist at the Indoor Environment Group within the Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory since 2003. He holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Buenos Aires (1998) and completed postdoctoral work in Environmental Engineering Science at Caltech (1998-2001) and Environmental Toxicology at UC Davis (2001-2003).

His research spans indoor air quality, thirdhand smoke hazards, photocatalytic oxidation, ozone reactions with indoor pollutants, and building material impacts on environmental health. Key projects include thirdhand smoke carcinogenicity studies in mice, development of ASTM-standardized cool roof aging protocols, and characterization of vaping/cannabis emissions.

2018 and 2016 awards highlight breakthroughs in thirdhand smoke public health impacts and cool roof technology. Recent publications focus on nanosheet composite design, thirdhand smoke exposure pathways, ozone remediation, and VOC emission dynamics from tobacco and cannabis products.
