Daniel Jaffe is a Professor of Environmental Chemistry at the University of Washington Bothell, with a joint appointment in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington Seattle campus. He has been at UW Bothell since 1997 and is a leading expert in atmospheric chemistry, ozone photochemistry, and the long-range transport of pollutants. Dr. Jaffe directs the Mt. Bachelor Observatory research station in Bend, Oregon, which has been operational since 2004.
Dr. Jaffe's research focuses on atmospheric chemistry, ozone photochemistry, wildfire smoke effects on air quality, and the long-range transport of pollutants across the Pacific Ocean. His work has demonstrated how pollutants from Asia affect air quality in the western United States, particularly regarding ozone and mercury. He has also conducted significant research on the impacts of wildfires on regional air quality and developed practical solutions for improving indoor air quality during smoke events.
His research group has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers on air pollution topics, with recent work focusing on wildfire smoke impacts on ozone production, effectiveness of air filtration methods during smoke events, and measurement techniques for biomass burning emissions. Dr. Jaffe and his team have pioneered the use of low-cost DIY air purifiers (box fans with MERV-13 filters) as effective solutions for wildfire smoke.
- Washington State Academy of Sciences (elected 2021)
- Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Environmental Sciences
- Member of National Academy of Science panel on Intercontinental Transport of Air Pollutants
Dr. Jaffe has advised numerous graduate students and post-doctoral researchers, including Matt Ninneman, Nate May, and James Laing. His research has been funded by NSF, NOAA, NASA, EPA, and industry partners, with recent projects also supported through crowdfunding. His work has significant implications for air quality policy and public health, particularly regarding wildfire smoke management in the western United States.
Dr. Jaffe is a frequent media commentator on air quality issues, having been featured in numerous outlets including The Washington Post, Popular Science, Seattle Times, and national television networks. His research on indoor air quality during wildfire events has provided practical guidance to millions of residents in wildfire-prone regions.
