Tiago Carrilho Bilo is an Assistant Professor in the School of Marine Sciences at the University of Maine. His research focuses on ocean dynamics and climate science, particularly the transport of energy, mass, and seawater properties driven by large-scale ocean processes. He investigates the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), abyssal circulation, and variability in the North and South Atlantic basins.
Education includes a Ph.D. in Physical Meteorology and Physical Oceanography from the University of Miami (2020), an M.Sc. in Physical Oceanography from the University of São Paulo (2015), and a B.Sc. in Oceanography from the same institution (2012).
Research interests encompass AMOC weakening trends, freshwater anomalies in the subpolar North Atlantic, deep western boundary current dynamics, and abyssal water mass changes. His work combines observational data and modeling to understand climate system interactions. Recent publications highlight the impacts of freshening events on Irminger Current transport, decadal AMOC variability, and warming trends in abyssal waters.
Teaching includes SMS 302 – Oceanography. Collaborations involve initiatives like the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP), contributing to long-term ocean monitoring efforts.
