Dr. Susan Lozier serves as Dean of the College of Sciences and holds the Betsy Middleton and John Clark Sutherland Chair at Georgia Institute of Technology, where she is also a Professor in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. As chief academic officer, she provides leadership to approximately 3,000 students and 500 faculty members across six internationally-ranked schools within the College of Sciences.
Dr. Lozier's research focuses on physical oceanography with particular emphasis on the ocean's role in climate variability and change. Her work has significantly advanced understanding of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), challenging previous assumptions about where the primary overturning occurs in the North Atlantic. She serves as the international project lead for the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP), a major international observing system designed to measure meridional overturning in the subpolar North Atlantic.
Her research has revealed that most of the overturning circulation occurs to the east of Greenland rather than in the Labrador Sea as previously thought, which has important implications for climate models and predictions of how ocean circulation might respond to climate change.
Dr. Lozier has received significant recognition for her contributions to oceanography and climate science:
- Immediate Past President of the American Geophysical Union
- Betsy Middleton and John Clark Sutherland Chair
- Member of the National Academies Climate Security Roundtable
- Board of Directors for the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research
As an academic leader, Dr. Lozier serves on multiple professional societies including MPOWIR (Mentoring Physical Oceanography Women to Increase Retention), US AMOC, WHOI, and several scientific organizations. She has been featured in major media outlets including The Washington Post, Scientific American, The New York Times, and National Geographic discussing the critical role of ocean circulation in the global climate system.
Her leadership extends to major research initiatives and policy discussions, particularly regarding climate security and the intersection of ocean science with national security considerations. She actively participates in public science communication, including speaking engagements at events like the TED Climate Summit.
