Thora Tenbrink is a Professor of Linguistics at Bangor University's School of Arts, Culture and Language. She serves as Director of Postgraduate Research Studies in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and leads the Places of Climate Change Research Centre (PloCC). Her interdisciplinary work spans cognitive discourse analysis, spatial language studies, and climate change communication.
Academic background includes a DPhil from Bremen University on spatiotemporal expressions in English/German. Research focuses on how language reveals cognitive processes, particularly spatial/platial concepts, with recent emphasis on climate change contexts. She developed the empirical method Cognitive Discourse Analysis (CODA) detailed in her 2020 Cambridge monograph.
Recent publications examine tidal literacy, spatial reference systems across domains, and environmental discourse in Welsh communities. Her EU-funded SellSTEM project addresses spatial ability deficits in STEM education through teacher training and curriculum development.
Scientific recognition includes 2022 Fellowship in the Learned Society of Wales. Supervision opportunities available in discourse analysis, place-based climate research, cognitive linguistics, and interdisciplinary methodologies.
